Self Portrait as a Female Artist / Self Portrait as a Ghost by Angela McHugh

Self Portrait as a Female Artist / Self Portrait as a Ghost

Angela McHugh

About the artwork and sitter

Angela McHugh, a suburban dreamer, who creates art to explore personal connections with nature, history, and her surroundings.

She typically paints at night, after her workday, in the backyard studio of her North Brisbane residence. The nocturnal creatures that inhabit her garden frequently find their way onto her canvas. In her latest series, Angela delves into the intricate dance between necessity and desire.

Angela’s self portrait features nocturnal birds and the flower, Datura Metel, both of which are found in her Taringa share house.

‘There is a psychological challenge that comes with undertaking a self portrait. It isn’t easy to explore your innermost thoughts or your outer skin.’

‘Here, I am unveiling the things that make me feel most alive – art, nature, narrative and the inconvenient necessity of creating. Here, I am nurturing what I neglected for too long.’
