About the artwork and sitter
Vince Frost is the founder and CEO of FROST COLLECTIVE, one of the world’s most sought-after design firms.
He has been one of Mark’s closest friends for 20 years, ‘and yet there is always something unsaid between us.’
This portrait marks the beginning of a new body of work for Mark and it was his name that became the starting point.
‘The painting is an attempt to reflect my relationship with Vince by putting a veneer between the viewer and the sitter. Nothing is sharp or perfectly clear. In this way I was hoping to isolate Vince from those who might be gazing upon him.’
About the artist
Mark Collis came to painting very late having spent a lifetime in the advertising industry as a creative director.
The highlight of his career was being the executive creative director that helped create Earth Hour. There was satisfaction in doing something to help the planet.
Since then, Mark has taken baby steps into the world of art and through portraiture he is always able to find something new in his subjects.
“I have explored several themes with colour being at the heart of everything I've done."
Behind the scenes
Vince ‘Frost’ and I have been friends for 20 years. I count Vince as one of my closest friends and yet there is always something unsaid between us.
‘Frost’ marks the beginning of a new body of work for me. Up until now my subject matter has been interpreted through strong graphic colour. Vibrant blues, greens, pinks and oranges. I thought for some time about how I could approach the sitter. In the end it was his name that became my starting point.
The painting is an attempt to reflect my relationship with Vince by putting a veneer between the viewer and the sitter. Nothing is sharp or perfectly clear. In this way I was hoping to isolate Vince from those who might be gazing upon him.
I have explored several themes with colour being at the heart of everything I’ve done. The challenge for me has always been subject matter. I have been looking for something new but have yet to find it. I realize now that with landscape and portrait there is always something new, and so I am going to pursue these motifs until I find what I’m looking for.
