About the artwork and sitter

This intricate portrait shows a typical Brisbane scene. Musician Asha Jefferies is relaxing on her verandah, with the dense subtropical bush behind her.

Hailing from the Northern Rivers and raised in Brisbane, Asha Jefferies is best known for her sombre, melancholy pop songs- combining the patience of folk with the urgency of youth.

Monica says: “I’ve painted Asha with an open, relaxed pose and direct gaze reflecting the vulnerability and self-assuredness she expresses through her music. She’s standing on her verandah in Highgate Hill, the view from her creative space where she’s been writing her next album. I’ve tried to convey a weightlessness in the shimmering floorboards and diffused light of the overcast day when we met.”

Asha has won a Queensland Music Award and triple j Unearthed’s NIDA Competition.
