About the artist
Russell Shakespeare is a freelance photographer based on the Gold Coast, Australia. His work has been published in many national magazines and newspapers, including Qantas Magazine, Gourmet Traveller, The Deal, Q Weekend, Good Weekend, Time, Australian Traveller, Financial Review and The Weekend Australian magazine, and in books by, among others, The Magnum Foundation, Australian Geographic, The Museum of Brisbane and The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation. Awards include The Moran Contemporary Photographic prize, Black and White Photographer of the Year, National Photographic portrait prize, Olive Cotton Exhibition and Walkley Award for Journalism. His work is collected in The QAGOMA, Tweed River Art Gallery, and The National Portrait Gallery.
About the sitter
Trent Dalton is a Brisbane journalist and writer whose first published novel, Boy Swallows Universe, has catapulted him to international fame. A staff writer for The Weekend Australian Magazine and former assistant editor of the Courier-Mail, he won many journalism awards, including the Walkleys, the NSW Kennedy Awards and the News Awards. Boy Swallows Universe is based on his extraordinary experience growing up in Brisbane, and is known for it’s strong sense of place, showcasing the suburbs of Brisbane, particularly Darra, and Brisbane’s City Hall. It has won four Australian Book Industry Awards, the first time all four major prizes have gone to the same author in the history of the ABIAs, which are voted on by an academy of more than 250 figures from the publishing industry. Dalton has also won the UTS Glenda Adams Award for New Writing and People’s Choice award at the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, the Indie Book Awards Book of the Year and the MUD Literary Prize. The book has since been translated into 32 languages, and has been made into a play by Queensland Theatre.
