About the artist
Joe Furlonger was born in Cairns, and grew up in Samford, Brisbane, where he now lives and works. He is regarded as one of Australia’s most respected landscape painters, known for his use of hand-made acrylic paints and reused canvases. His works are very physical, with large swathes of paint, usually a mix of figurative and abstraction. He has exhibited all over Australia, including at the Heiser Gallery in Brisbane, most recently in 2017. He has been an Archibald Prize finalist nine times, won the Moet & Chandon Fellowship in 1988, and the Fleurieu Art Prize for Landscape in 2002. His work is represented in the all major State and National Galleries.
About the sitter
In this work, Joe Furlonger is continuing a series of self portraits he has been working on for the last year or so, alongside his usual extensive art practice, which encompasses a range of mediums and genres. This painting is about the usual self examination that comes with the passage of time, and continues on from his work self portrait work hung in the Archibald over the years.
